My Pet Monster

She didn’t like him at first.

No, in fact she downright hated him.

She’d yell at me to take him out of her room, that he scared her, that she didn’t like his oversized teeth.

“But Natalie,” I said. “He’s friendly. He wouldn’t hurt you.”

“I don’t YIKE him,” Natalie argued.

So I’d scoop him up and take him away. I’d sit him down on the floor in the living room. In the morning I’d watch Natalie check him out. She’d poke his nose, pat his fur, and squeeze his foot.

And then one day it happened:

“I yike him now,” Natalie said proudly. She carried him in his arms, a big smile on her face.

I smiled down at the thing that used to be my friend when I was a little girl. (Yup. I remember begging my parents for him.)

“Isn’t he great?” I asked.

“Yup,” Natalie agreed. “But he still can’t sleep in my room.”

Oh well. Baby steps.

(And please tell me that people remember this monster. He’s from a show that aired in the 80s called My Pet Monster.)

As soon as I read the title, my mind immediately went to "My Pet Monster" and the commercials. Wasn't there a song that went along with it that got stuck in your head all day?

I remember, I still have mine. But I'm selfish and won't let my little ones touch him. He's sensitive.

And when I was her age I wouldn't have let that sleep in my room either. lol

I didn't know he had a show, but I remember him from commercials or something. His nose is bigger than I remembered. How cool that you still have him to pass along! Me? I would have hidden him places to scare my kids. Under their sheets, on top of the toilet to surprise them when they need to pee at night...

I vaguely remember him...

Your daughter is beautiful! Love that hair. Love her personality too - "can't sleep in my room still".

Natalie is beautiful - she's gonna frustrate the living heck out of some guy some day...

Natalie is super cute!

I'm too young to remember that show, all I could do was look at the monster and wonder what the heck he was.

Nope.. never heard of him

but I like "ugly" cute things.. Aidyn had a stuffed robot.. but I don't know where it went!

boo :(

I do remember him vaguely. We didn't have tv full time until 1989. It was whatever I caught on visits to other people's homes.

He is one ugly dood. Ms. Beasly is creepier though, and she's a doll, not a monster. Go figure.

Natalie is adorable!

When I saw the title I wondered if it was going to be one of those big stuffed My Pet Monsters!! I'm not sure I'd let him sleep in my room, either, and I'm 30.

Very cute ...but you must be much younger than me cause if you said the show was in the 70's then I would know...but in the 80's I was in high school then married! LOL.

I can't say that I remember him, exactly, though he does seem very familiar. I could be thinking of ALF, though.

Leah Rubin said...

Nope, somehow I missed him completely, but he's darn cute-- Natalie is still beyond gorgeous, though... Love that smile!

Nope, can't remember him but he sure looks cute and in such good shape. Did you even play with him because he looks like he sat on your shelf untouched?

Sara said...

I like that your daughter has no problem creating boundaries.

And I have only a vague recollection of that show, but I don't think I'd let him sleep in my room either.

Jen said...

I vaguely recall that show! We had an Alf doll that eventually became a toy for the doggies, haha.

Natalie is getting so big! And still cute as ever!

Mommy Lisa said...

wow. Another post reminding me I am old - I must have been too old for that show, you know with being in high school and at college in the 80's and all...sigh.

Pat said...

I must be too old because I don't remember him. I can see Natalie's point about not letting him sleep in her room though!

jayayceeblog said...

Everybody can use another friend. He's lucky to have her. But where will he sleep???

Ohmygoodness!! My brother had one of those! That monster and a Goblin are currently residing in my parent's basement, where my daughters refuse to go!
