Anne, Gilbert, and Pinecones?

For awhile I toyed around with dressing up as Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables on Halloween.

I had it in my head that I’d sew a blue dress with puffed sleeves—and then I remembered that I didn’t even know how to sew.

So then I thought about buying a drab dress, the kind that Marilla dubbed acceptable, and having Tommy be Gilbert. He’d be easier. I could stick him in brown pants, and a white shirt with suspenders.

But do you know how weird store workers look at you when you ask if they carry slates? Slates, because in the movie, Anne smacks a slate down on Gilbert’s head for calling her Carrots due to her red hair. In my mind I would shock other Trick or Treaters by banging Tommy’s head with a slate—and then I thought, oops, this could be conceived as child abuse and actually, a slate to the head would probably hurt.

So no dressing up as Anne. No Gilbert. No slates.

I just wore normal clothes. I could have put on my Anne Boleyn dress but when I wore it last year, Natalie tried to take off on me a few times and do you know how hard it is to run in that costume? I kept tripping over the skirts to the point where I had to lift them WAYYY up and hope I wasn’t flashing anyone.

Tommy dressed up as a creepy Skeleton.

And Natalie, as I’ve mentioned before, was a peacock, and it was especially fun to have to explain to the person exactly what Natalie was when she left out the word ‘pea.’

I tried to get a good photo of them together. This was not easy:

After that we met up with Amanda and her family.

Trying to get a group photo is also not easy.

And then it was time to Trick or Treat!

This amused me. The sign said “Billy Bob says just take one!”

And look at this dude’s décor. A giant propeller!

We were out for nearly 2 hours.

This is the final tally of candy for the both of them:

Do you see the giant pixie sticks? Some wonderful person was passing them out and Tommy said I could have his.

I’m hiding Natalie’s unless I want her dancing off the ceiling.

Yes, that is a pinecone in the corner. Natalie insisted on keeping it.

And I’m so claiming the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. I birthed them, therefore the chocolatey peanut butter treats belong to me.

CUTE!!! LOVE the peacock outfit!

I don't blame you about not dressing up... I bet it would have been tough chasing after Natalie w/ a long, flowing dress on... :o)

Cute costumes!

And you can totally steal your kid's candy. My husband and I were laughing about how we are already planning on doing that- must make a kid first though! :-)

Nothing wrong with taking some treats from the kiddies, all in the name of safety of course. ;)

The peacock outfit is adorable.

A giant pixie stick was my first taste of sugar back when I was three. I blame the people who poured it into my mouth for my current addiction to sweets.
Natalie was actually a peahen (the word for female peafowl). Perhaps telling her that would have changed things. :)

I love the peacock costume. And now I want candy.

Dh claimed the pb cups. I'm claiming the milk duds, snickers, and sour skittles.

I'm sure that announcement, "I'm a cock" played well with the neighbors. Those pixie stix? Demon spawn. Getting Natalie off the ceiling is so not in your job description.

Aw they're so cute! Those pixie sticks are huge...I would hide them too - they must be grandparents or just not have kids. haha!

I'm still totally in love with the peacock costume!

I'm also in love with the beautiful old brick houses you were trick or treating too. Where do you live again? Midwest?

Looks like a good time and a good haul.

Besides having somebody to do my chores for me later on, being able to raid my kids' candy stash is one of the best perks of parenthood. It's like having your own little trick-or-treating henchmen!

Great pics. As you'll see from the pics on my blog, Tommy would have fit right in at our house :-) I already rooted through my stepdaughter's candy for her Tootsie Rolls. My fave :-0

It goes without saying that you get the peanut butter cups - that's one of the few perks of being a parent!

My dad is like that with butterfingers.

I totally went out in regular clothes and a witch's hat.

My kids sweetly gave me lots of Snickers' bars this year. And my ass isn't going to like it...

My niece called peacocks "poopcocks" for the longest time. I adored that phase...

Would've loved to see the looks on your neighbors' faces when Natalie left out "pea"!

Who had that big house?
Let them eat as much as they want, better to get rid of it fast and be hyper for just a day or two than argue and have sugar highs all week. (unless you eat it all)

Amber Page Writes said...

I couldn't think of a good costume either, so when anyone asked, I said "tired mom." Shut them right up!

You go, Reese's thief! :D

Candy, YUM.

Everyone looks great! I didn't dress up either, but I also did not come up with elaborate costume ideas in my head. Maybe next year. I will add it to the list under "learn to sew". :)

The peacock costume is too cute. I totally think parents should get to collect a candy fee for taking them trick or treating.

PS we didn;t have a pine cone but we did have leaves in our bags.

Love the peacock! I thought about buying it for Dani for next year, since they didn't make it small enough for her this year, but I think I have my heart set on her being abby cadabby already!

Hey, is that skeleton giving us the finger?
Also: I stumbled on a way to have mom-fun: anything my kid does wrong, I threaten to eat ALL of her candy. I did it for a few days before Halloweeen and I continue to work this little gem at every opportunity post Sugarmania. She keeps asking if I mean it, and I say, "oh, yeah!" Because I do mean it. Go try it; it's very fun.

Such cute costumes!! Looks like a great halloween.

So are you going to eat those Pixie sticks or just snort them? ;)

Midwest Mommy said...

I have eaten a ridiculous amount of peanut butter cups. Too cute and looks like everyone had a blast.

Your kids are so cute! LOL about the peacock costume.

I've been eating my daughter's candy all day! Thank goodness she's willing to share!

Sandra said...

Love the pics. I laughed at the part where you have to repeat the first part of the peacock costume. Yeah, that would have been interesting!

#1 - You have BEAUTIFUL children!
#2 - Love your take on candy stealing! I couldn't agree more!
#3 - LOVE that you know Anne of Green Gables - I have tried to explain to my husband how he reminds me of Gilbert in so many ways but...he can't get it...b/c he has never read and will NEVER read the books.

I am a new fan!! Your blog is FABULOUS!!

It is friggin' HARD to get a picture of more than one person at a time. Luckily you already got loads of gorgeous peacock pictures of Natalie. Love that costume. And I juuuuuuuust finished my daughter's very last Reeses. It was delicious, and I have no regrets!

Cute, cute, cute. Looks like fun! And quite a candy haul!!!

Not as bad a Freak Magnet as Norman said...

I was one of those 'put the bowl outside with a note to take 2' people. But only because my steps aren't exactly safe and my porch lights aren't working, so I don't want people coming to the door, and it was too frickin' cold for me to sit outside with it.

Natalie said...

Oh my.. My daughter was the SAME peacock this year. I loved it! Although, a friend of ours kept asking her what she was going to be. She would reply Peacock & he would say, pea what? Only to have her finish the word. I'll admit. I laughed.
And by the way, I love her name : )

I think the Skeleton dude looked really cool... :)
