In Historical Buildings

This might be my last post for a few days.

We've moved into TLF (temporary lodging facility for you non-military people) and there is no WiFi in there. It's because the buildings are historical or some nonsense. Look, I think the spirits of the 1800s would appreciate being able to go online.

Anyway. Most of our house is packed up. Today they finish packing and then tomorrow everything is loaded onto the truck.

And then it's time to clean the house, because in base housing, you can't just be like, "We're all packed up so we're leaving now. Peace." You have to clean it to their standards. Someone from housing will walk through the house, ensuring that everything is clean.

(Which, okay, I don't totally get because they hire cleaners to come into the house after we leave anyway.)

Lucky for us, we hired a cleaner.

Though we've still be cleaning.

I was scrubbing the floors yesterday and Tom was like, "Um. Aren't we hiring someone to do that?"

"Yes but, I don't want her to know what SLOBS we are!" I shrieked, scrubbing at a stubborn dark stain.

If all goes well, we'll check out of housing on the 14th and be on the road to Oklahoma on the 15th.

Maybe Oklahoma's TLF has WiFi.

Unless their buildings are all historical too.

What military base are you guys heading to in OK? I know Fort Sill has WiFi in TLF. :o) But I don't know if that helps you any! Good luck with the move!

If you're going to Altus AFB, their TLF is not historic. I don't know about the base close to OKC. Have fun and be safe!!

P.S. My ex and I were in Altus if you want to know some of the fun things to do or great places to eat.

We were once in the army, and I remember that frenetic cleaning craziness to pass inspection when we left quarters! Yikes!

Good luck with the move-- travel safely, and I hope you love your new place. May it be blessed with Wi-Fi.

Are military housing walls still pale green? My sister used to fill nail holes with Crest toothpaste. Not sure what other shortcuts she found. Anyway, smooth sailing, Amber!

The spirits of the 1800's (who don't exist because I don't believe in ghosts, but for the sake of argument here) WOULD love to have WiFi. Good luck this weekend!

We're in temp housing too, as my husband recently took a new job in Cali - in fact I just wrote about it! We do have wifi, but no printer or fax, and the only computer up and running is a tiny, slow netbook - so I feel just a little of your pain!

I feel for you - have lived the military life and the moves are stressful. It's hard for non-military people to understand that the stress of a military move is compounded by the fact that you usually did NOT want to be moved to the exact place you are going to find as your next home. I remember us getting our orders for the next base and I'd RUN for the map. I salute you as a military family - thank you for serving and for doing your part!

For "normal" moving times...moving can indeed be an adventure and can help you clean out the closets on an awesome level, but a military move is filled with changes on many levels. I hope the new destination is one that you preferred and that everything goes as smoothly as possible. And, I hope you don't have terrible withdrawals from WiFi, at least you'll be gathering lots of things to write about! Happy transplantation!

Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well (and the only loss enroute is one ugly jacket).

:)

I suspect the spirits of the 1800's would be amazed by WiFi.

I always think it's funny that women insist on pre-cleaning their houses before the cleaner takes over.

Good luck with your move.

They make you live somewhere temporary? Why can't you just move right in? Anyway, good luck, safe trip, hope the movers don't steal anything.

I just found your blog and I like it. The design is clever and the posts are good.

I'm guessing you moved to Charleston, SC. We're a very historical city. I can see how hard it would be to get WiFi in one of those old houses.

Anyway, congratulations on moving. Great blog post and I'll check back again soon.
