Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Not Many Handwritten Cards

Look, I get that it’s an electronic age and that’s fine.

But whatever happened to a good old thank you card? Hand written.

I still do this and I wish more people did. For the holidays people sent my kids stuff so I had them write a thank you card. I wrote thank you cards for the things I got. But not a lot of people do this these days.

I get people are busy. So if I get a message on Facebook saying thank you then I’m cool with that. A couple of times I probably did this to people my age who might not get what a thank you card is. But to my parents and grandparents, I always, always write a handwritten card.

It’s also a shame when people never let you know if they got the gift. And then you have to go and message them and they’re like, “Oh! Yes, that came last week.” ???

I think the world would be a better place if more people wrote actual thank you cards. If you must do it online, again, at least it’s something. But really, our generation is getting lazy and rude and it makes me embarrassed for us.

So why not go out and purchase some thank you cards? They make some really cute ones these days and not overly expensive either. Instead of playing Words with Friends or browsing Facebook, write a couple of lines saying how much you appreciated the gift. And if you really didn’t like the gift, lie.

After all, everyone likes getting happy mail instead of bills or ads for how you can get larger breasts for a buck. (It’s not true. In smaller print it says that most payments are 5000-6000. So I guess for a buck you can get felt up or something and told, “Okay, your breasts suck. Allow me to improve them for 5 grand!”)

  1. I LOVE handwritten notes. And am a big fan of them. Between a wedding and a new baby I think I've probably written 300+ in the last 2 years alone!!

Oh, and get this, some people are starting electronic wedding invites. Not. A. Fan.

  2. I still do handwriting thank you cards, and I make my daughter color on some construction paper as a thank you for gifts she receives (she is 2). It only takes a few minutes. It is one thing I really hope my kids continue to do as the grow older.

  3. I still do handwritten cards and definitely plan on making my daughter do them to. I hate when people don't acknowledge presents!

  4. I love getting real mail! I've been working on sending out real letters for the last six months. I've probably sent at least 10 so far. I've only gotten one in return, from my Grandma! A little disappointing but oh well, at least Grandma writes back :)

  5. I afree a handwritten note is so great to get! We definitely live too much in the tech world that people don't think anymore to take an extra second to do something a little more personal!

  6. I hear you. I'm guilty though of being lazy to write a thank you note. But I miss those days of good old fashion letter writing and everything written. Now we get on the computer for pretty much everything. It's sad.

  7. I was raised to write a thank you card. When I was younger I couldn't play with the item until I wrote one! To this day, it's engrained in me. I love getting mail.

I'd like to one up you. I hate when I get thank you cards that are "thanks for the XXXXXX, we like it. Love XXXXX." It's like christmas cards that are just signed. Why bother?

  8. I am horrible at this. :/ I was writing out my thank you cards for my baby shower (which I was late on anyways...) got into an argument with my husband about the way I wrote my return address and then completely lost my train of thought on them. So, I put them up to finish later and never did. :( oops.

In my defense, I did thank everyone in person at my baby shower as they were leaving and I called up anyone who bought us anything afterwards.

But, I completely agree with you. I should have finished them.

  9. Agreed. We usually don't do this for holiday gifts, as we thank one another in person, but for graduation and other occasions where the gift-givers might not be around in person? It's nice to think enough to send them a card.

I wish we had more pen/paper correspondence in general. My penmanship has suffered terribly due to my beloved internet!

  10. Love love love handwritten thank you notes- I've always been a huge supporter and actually would only hire people who sent notes after interviews.

  11. Amen, amen, AMEN!

Part of it has to do with parents teaching (and reinforcing) it. Sadly, far too many do anymore.

  12. Amen! I get ANXIETY over the timeliness of my thank-you cards. And there's really no excuse not to buy them these days when they're on clearance for a buck fifty a pack at Target and Walmart (and CUTE too!). Since Sam and Molly are too young to write their own cards, I have Sam doodle something on a sheet of paper (grandparents love that sort of thing, you know) and then I write it in his voice. I really enjoy coming up with sarcastic comments and funny things he might say if he was the Etrade baby! I vote we bring back snail mail. Maybe elect a new postmaster (no more bills in the mail! cheaper stamps! a drive-thru post office dammit!). Who's with me?!

    ;)

  13. I could not agree more!! There is nothing like getting a handwritten note. It's special and email or a phone call doesn't even come close!

  14. I don't think I have been here before so.."hi" next I do like to do handwritten thank you notes but hell I still write letters and send them via snail mail.......

  15. I LOVE getting mail, so I sometimes send things to friends, just because. I love to think it cheers them up. I'm fine with an email thank you, but saying nothing is so rude, and means I probably wouldn't bother sending anything good the next time.

  16. I agree with you. It seems like now-a-days days, this is becoming a lost art.

  17. I agree! Most of the time when I send gifts to my nieces and nephews all I want is a text thanking or some acknowledgment and I get nothing. Drives me nuts!

  18. I just mailed some cards today! Drives me absolutely insane that people don't go out of their way to let others know that a. they got the gift and b. they appreciate it.. boo.

  19. I will take any form of thank you which i did not get from certain people. Rudeness!

  20. Not a fan. I hate cards - birthday cards, Christmas cards etc. To me it's just more junk around the house. But to not even acknowledge that you received something is plain rude.

  21. I love thank you cards. I try to send them whenever possible and I love it when I get them.

What really pisses me off is when people do a pre-printed thank you and mail that. Way to half-ass it! It's like they understand they're supposed to mail a card but they can't be bothered to thank you for the gift you gave specifically.
